I think you’d have to go back to the 1850s to find a period of congressional dysfunction like the one we’re in today… There have been plenty of times when the rhetorical heat has been high, sometimes higher than now. What’s most amazing today is not fiery words, but the inability to do necessary business.

In that case, the useless Congress failed to address the issue of slavery, which as we know, led to the Civil War.  The congress’ of that decade were an even bigger failure than the congress’ of 2001 to present day. How pathetic. Recall All Republicans in 2012!

What about the early 90s? Y’know, when there was an actual federal government shutdown courtesy of Newt Gingrich? Or that whole impeachment thing? I mean yeah it’s bad and intractable but “the worst since the civil war” seems like a stretch. One to get some attention so maybe somebody will take your class “The History of the American Congress”.

There have actually been multiple government shutdowns since t he early 1980’s. But in terms of actual legislation passed, this Congress is literally the worst. They’ve passed about 1/4 of the average, while introducing more “symbolic” bills than anyone.

No, I’m not making this up.
